Meet Bobby Walker of Devil’s Backbone Knives. In this course, he walks you through his method for making a Loveless-style drop-point hunter from 80CrV2 steel.

You’ll follow the steel through forging, surface grinding, tang layout, heat treatment, finish grinding, handle construction, and final sharpening—then learn how to inspect and care for the knife you made.

01 · START SMART

Safety, tools & design

Prepare your shop, understand protective equipment, choose your steel and tools, and work from the drop-point template. Learn the knife’s anatomy and how design relates to hand fit.

02 · SHAPE & STRENGTH

Forging & heat treatment

Follow the first heats, point and belly refinement, handle shaping, straightening and profile checks. Continue through surface grinding, tang-hole layout, maker’s mark, thermal cycling, quenching and tempering.

03 · FINISH WITH PURPOSE

Geometry, handle & final edge

Lay out and grind the bevels, fit handle scales and Loveless bolts, then shape, sand and finish the grip. Complete final sharpening, testing and inspection, with reference lessons on care and your next build.
